His fellow Messengers, in addition to Blakey, were bassist Jymie Merritt, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, and trumpeter Lee Morgan, who virtually stole the show with his bold, swaggering solo. ![]() There are three tracks that are immortal and will always stand the test of time. 'Moanin'' was written by pianist Bobby Timmons, who was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers when they recorded it in 1958. "Moanin’" was Art Blakey’s first album for Blue Note in several years, after a period of recording for a miscellany of labels, and marked both a homecoming and a fresh start.
